Intrigue on a German Train

After some time, the old man, who was beginning to dominate the conversation, seemed to get a bit nervous. Soon, Barbara and I saw why. 
As he prattled on about this and that, he dug into one of his packs and took out two shaving bags. He opened them and showed us what was inside.
Both bags were filled to the top with gold dust.
The old man encouraged Barbara and I to run our fingers through the gold, which we enthusiastically did.
